Batticaloa

Eastern Province

Batticaloa is a lagoon city on the east coast, with an old Dutch fort, a lighthouse and long stretches of quiet beach nearby. It is the main town of the region and a gateway to Pasikudah.

The lagoon is the centre of local life, and a legend of singing fish draws visitors on still evenings. The nearby beaches are among the quietest on the island, and the town makes a good stop between Trincomalee and the south-east.
