Bentota is a beach and river resort on the south-west coast, where a wide sandy beach sits beside the Bentota River and its mangrove islands. It is the closest of the southern beaches to Colombo airport, which makes it a popular first or last stop.
The river is the busiest place for water sports and gentle boat trips through the mangroves, and many hotels offer Ayurvedic treatments. Brief Garden and the Lunuganga estate, both linked with the architect Geoffrey Bawa and his brother Bevis, lie a short drive away.
