Jaffna is the cultural capital of the north, with a distinct Tamil heritage, food and language. Its skyline is marked by the tall gopuram of the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka.

The Dutch fort, the public library and the lively market are the main sights in the city, and the islands and beaches around the peninsula make good day trips. The road north is long, so many visitors plan an overnight stay.
