Matara

Southern Province

Matara is the largest town on the southern coast, built around a river mouth with a Dutch-era fort and a small temple on an island linked by a footbridge. It is a working town rather than a resort, which gives a different view of the south.

The Paravi Duwa temple on its islet and the Star Fort are the main sights in town. Polhena beach just outside is sheltered and known for snorkelling, and a boat trip on the Nilwala River shows the wildlife along its banks.
