Minneriya National Park surrounds a large ancient reservoir, and in the dry season wild elephants gather on its shores in large numbers to drink and graze. This event is often called the Gathering and is one of the best wildlife sights on the island.
Jeep safaris run in the afternoon, when herds come out to the open grassland. The Gathering is usually at its peak in the middle of the dry season, but the timing shifts from year to year.
