Monaragala is a quiet inland town in the south-east, set among rocky hills and dry forest. A large seated Buddha carved into the rock marks the hillside, and the town sits on the road between the central hills and the east coast.

Most visitors pass through on the way to Arugam Bay or to the parks of the south-east, and a stop at the rock temple takes only a short time. Dress modestly and remove your shoes at the shrine.
