Negombo is a fishing town and beach resort just north of the airport, built around a lagoon and a long, busy beach. Colonial churches and old canals sit behind the seafront, and the fish market and fishing boats are a lively sight in the early morning.
A lagoon boat trip at sunrise is the classic way to see the town at work, and the beach road has plenty of restaurants for an evening meal. Many travellers stay here for the first or last night, to avoid a rushed drive to or from the airport.
