Pinnawala is a village between Colombo and Kandy, known for the elephant orphanage where young and injured elephants are cared for. The elephants walk to the Maha Oya river each day to bathe, a sight that draws many visitors.

Watching the herd cross the road and bathe in the river is the highlight, and it is best to arrive for the bathing times. Choose to watch rather than ride or feed, and respect the keepers and the animals.
