Northern Province
Vavuniya is the main town between the centre of the island and Jaffna, on the long road to the north. It is a busy trading place with temples and shrines, and a practical stop for anyone travelling to the Northern Province.
Most visitors break the long drive here for a meal and a rest. Colourful Hindu shrines stand along the roads, and the surrounding countryside is dry zone farmland and forest.
