Where to stay on your first night in Sri Lanka
The Lanka Arrivals team · 7 Nov 2026
Most flights into Colombo land in the night or early morning, and the road south is long. Deciding where to sleep on the first night is the single best way to start a trip well.
Option 1: stay near the airport in Negombo
Negombo is a beach and fishing town 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, with hotels for every budget. If you land late or are tired, you can be in bed within the hour and start the journey rested the next morning. It also suits the last night of a trip, so a morning flight is never a rush. Option 2: go straight to the coast
If you land in the morning, you can head straight for the south coast: Bentota is the closest beach, and Galle, Unawatuna and Mirissa follow. Driving south in the dark after a long flight is tiring, so a night in Colombo or Negombo is wiser if you land after dark.
Option 3: head inland
For the hills and the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, Dambulla and Sigiriya are three to three and a half hours away. A daytime arrival works well; if you land at night, rest first and leave in the morning.
A simple rule
- Landing before noon: go straight on if you feel well.
- Landing in the evening or at night: sleep near the airport.
- Travelling with children or after a very long flight: add a night in Negombo or Colombo.
