Taxi, train or bus: getting around Sri Lanka
The Lanka Arrivals team · 7 Nov 2026
Sri Lanka is a small island, but distances take longer than the map suggests. Roads wind, towns run into each other and speeds are modest. Here is how the main choices compare.
Private taxi with a driver
The simplest choice for most visitors: door to door, air-conditioned, with room for luggage and stops along the way. It is the best option for families, groups and anyone arriving after a long flight. Our airport transfers have a fixed fare; other trips are quoted on WhatsApp. See our vehicles and taxi hire.
Trains
The hill-country railway, especially Kandy to Ella, is one of the most beautiful rides in the country. Reserved seats in the popular classes sell out well ahead, and large bags are awkward on crowded trains. Many travellers take the train for the scenic leg and use a driver for the rest.
Buses
Buses reach almost everywhere and are very cheap, but they are crowded, slow and not built for suitcases. They suit short hops and adventurous travellers more than airport days.
Three-wheelers and ride apps
Three-wheeler taxis are ideal for short trips inside a town. Agree the price before you start, or use a ride app where one is available. They are not meant for long drives.
A mix often works best
A common plan is a driver from the airport to your first base, the train for the hills, and a private taxi for day trips and the journey back. Our trip planner lets you pick places on a map and send the list to us on WhatsApp for a quote.
