Money, SIM cards and getting online in Sri Lanka
The Lanka Arrivals team · 7 Nov 2026
A few practical things to sort out in your first hour. Rates, offers and rules change, so treat this as a checklist and confirm details on the day.
Money
- The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). The airport has exchange counters and ATMs in the arrivals hall.
- Exchange only what you need at the airport, and compare rates in town. Card payment is common in hotels and larger restaurants, while small shops, tuk-tuks and tips are cash.
- You pay our drivers on arrival in cash, in USD, EUR, GBP or LKR. If you would rather pay by card, ask us on WhatsApp and we will send you a secure payment link.
- Expressway tolls and parking are paid separately at the gate or counter.
SIM cards and data
- Mobile network counters in the arrivals hall sell tourist SIM cards with data. Take your passport.
- Check that your phone is unlocked before you travel.
- An eSIM bought before you fly lets you be online the moment you land, which helps you find your driver.
- Hotels and cafes usually have Wi-Fi, but it can be slow in remote areas.
