Colombo airport to the south coast: how it works
The Lanka Arrivals team · 7 Nov 2026
The south coast is where most first-time visitors head: long beaches, surf, whale watching and the old Dutch fort at Galle. Here is how the trip from the airport works.
Which beach, how far
- Bentota: about 1 h 45 min. The closest beach, with river and water sports.
- Hikkaduwa: about 2 h 10 min. Surf, reef and a busy beachfront.
- Galle: about 2 h 15 min. The fort and its ramparts.
- Unawatuna: about 2 h 15 min. A sheltered bay beside Galle.
- Mirissa: about 2 h 35 min. Whale watching and palm-fringed sand.
- Weligama: about 2 h 30 min. A wide bay for surf lessons.
- Tangalle: about 3 h 30 min. Quiet beaches and villas.
How the drive goes
Most of the way follows the expressway, which is quick, with the coast road for the last stretch to your hotel. Times in this guide are typical; traffic, weather and the time of day can change them.
Tolls are paid at the gate and are not included in our fares, unless you ask for an all-inclusive price.
Good to know
- The best weather on this coast is roughly from November to April. See when to go.
- Galle Fort has narrow lanes, so the driver may stop at the gate. Tell us if you have heavy bags.
- Whale boats leave early, so book a transfer the evening before if that is your plan.
